Script: Latin

Lettering: IMP CAES TRAIAN AVG GER DAC P P REST VICTRIX

Unabridged legend: Imperator Caesar Traianus Augustus Germanicus Dacicus, Pater Patriae, Restituit, Victrix.

Translation: Supreme commander (Imperator), Caesar, Trajan, emperor (Augustus), conqueror of the Germans, conqueror of the Dacians, father of the nation, has restored [this coin], the victorious.

Comment

RIC has the obverse legend as M CATO ROMA, which is also in its source, Babelon (in agreement with the Republican version of the coin). But the cited source,  p. 100 “Bulletin of the Institute of Archaeological Correspondence”, 1838, has no M.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about this coin is that it features the image of Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom, on one side, and Victory on the other. This symbolizes the Roman Empire's values of liberty and victory during the reign of Emperor Trajan.
