Comment

This appears to be one of the first use of the XVI monogram (Ӿ) to mark denarius coins.

The gens Antestia, sometimes Antistia, was a plebeian family at Rome; the name of Antestia is certainly older given the family coinage comparison and evolution. The first of the gens to achieve prominence was Sextus Antistius, tribune of the people in 422 BC.

Interesting fact

The Denarius coin was issued during the Roman Republic, a time when Rome was still a republic and not yet an empire. The coin features the image of Lucius Antestius Gragulus, who was a moneyer, or a person responsible for minting coins, in Rome at the time. The coin's design includes the abbreviation "GRAG" which stands for "Gragulus," and "L•ANTES ROMA" which means "of Rome." This coin is a rare example of a Roman coin that was issued during this time period and still exists today, providing a glimpse into the economic and political systems of ancient Rome.
