Comment

The Social War, from socii meaning allies, opposes the Roman Republic and its Italian allies between 90 and 88 BC. It broke out after the assassination of the Tribune of the plebeian Livius Drusus in October 91, while he was trying to obtain Roman citizenship for the Italian allies of Rome. This revolt brought together the Peligni, Piceni, Vestini, Samnites, Frentani, Marrucini and Lucani under leadership of the Marsi; hence the name of the Marsic Confederation.

Oscan is an extinct Indo-European language close to Latin from southern Italy.

Could have been struck in the mints of Bovianum, Corfinium or Aesernia; probably by the Samnites.

Interesting fact

The Denarius (Anonymous: Marsic Confederation) coin was minted during a time of political turmoil in Rome, specifically during the Social War (91-88 BC) and the Civil War between Sulla and Marius (88-87 BC). Despite the conflicts, the coin's design remained relatively consistent with previous issues, featuring the goddess Roma on the obverse and a sacrificial scene on the reverse. This suggests that the minting authority aimed to maintain a sense of continuity and stability through the coinage, even in the face of political upheaval.
