The Cistophorus was a silver coin introduced by the Roman Emperor Nerva in 98 AD. It was the first Roman coin to feature the image of a deceased emperor, with Nerva's predecessor, Domitian, appearing on the obverse (front side) of the coin. This was a significant departure from the traditional Roman practice of featuring only living emperors on coins, and it paved the way for future emperors to be depicted on coins even after their death.
