Interesting fact
The As coin was used during the Roman Republic, a time when Rome was still a republic and not yet an empire. The As was the main unit of currency during this period, and it was divided into smaller denominations called semisses and trientes. The As coin was made of bronze and had a distinctive design, featuring the head of Janus, the Roman god of beginnings and endings, on one side and a ship's prow on the other. The use of Janus on the coin symbolized the idea of change and transition, which was fitting for a coin that was used during a time of great expansion and growth for Rome.
