Comment

RIC 518 was minted by the 5th officina (exergue-/mintmark: VXXI) of the Ticinum mint. RIC mentions 1 variation/bust type (bust types according to Pierre Bastiens grouping of bust types; see illustrated: probvs.net):

  1. Helmeted, radiate, cuirassed, left, holding spear in right hand and shield in left hand (E1 bust (example: probuscoins.fr #3187), Numista #292871).

This coin is part of the EQVITI series of Ticinum, which is, according to Pink, part of the 8th, 9th and 10th emission. In the EQVITI series, the 5th officina represents the letter T (EQVITI) as field mark (Karl Pink, Der Aufbau der römischen Münzprägung in der Kaiserzeit VI/I, Wien, 1949, p. 66-67). See on these coded series: Gert Boersema, The Translation of the Codewords AEQVITI, IOBI and HPKOY, Forumancientcoins.com, 2007.

According to Pink, RIC 518 - with its obverse lettering nr. 4inv ('VIRTVS PROBI INVICTI AVG') combined with 'PAX AVGVSTI' and field-/exergue mark T/-//VXXI - is part of the 9th emission, which was in the year 281 (Karl Pink, Der Aufbau der römischen Münzprägung in der Kaiserzeit VI/I, Wien, 1949, p. 67). RIC also lists field-/exergue mark T/✶//VIXXI for RIC 518, which is mistakenly not listed by OCRE. According to Pink, this field-/exergue mark was used in the 10th emission, which was in the year 282.

Interesting fact

The Antoninianus - Probus coin was part of a series of coins issued during the reign of Emperor Probus (276-282 AD) to celebrate the Roman Empire's military victories and to promote the ideals of peace and prosperity. The coin's design features a helmeted and cuirassed bust of Probus on the obverse (front side), and a representation of Pax (the Roman goddess of peace) on the reverse (back side), holding a spear and shield and surrounded by the legend "PAX AVG[VSTI]"; Pax), which translates to "Peace of the Augusti" or "Peace of the Empire." This coin was minted in Rome between 281-282 AD and was made of silver.
