Comment
Both " Dérém" and " Dalasi " come from the Arabic word "Dirham", but modified in Wolof and Mandinka languages. It is important to note that the number "8" in value does not have any relation with local names. Both "Dérém" and "Dalasi" mean "4 shilling - valued coin", and not translation of English word "Shilling" . So, derem nyaar and dalasi fula mean "two parts of basic currency" That is why local names in 1966 coins appear only from 4 Shilling valued coin, and not from lower.

Interesting fact
One interesting fact about this coin is that it features a unique portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, which was specifically designed for the Gambian currency. The portrait was created by sculptor Arnold Machin and shows the Queen wearing a crown and facing to the right, unlike the more common portraits of her that face to the left. This distinctive design makes the coin stand out among other coins featuring the Queen's image.
