These coins were officially demonetized by the Guatemalan government in 1873. Individuals only had three days in which to redeem cob coinage for current coinage or promissory notes. Colonial era coinage in El Salvador was also redeemed.

Interesting fact

The 8 Reales coin from Guatemala, minted during the reign of Philip V (1733-1746), has an interesting feature. The coin's design includes the image of the Spanish king on one side and the Guatemalan coat of arms on the other. This coin was used as legal tender in Guatemala and other Spanish colonies in Central America during that time.
