Comment
Host coin Cast copy of 1806TH KM#109During the war, some foe parties would try to imitate the opposing factions stamps in order to provide their forces with fake currency to cause damage. So when a coin that had previously been countermarked returned to that said army they often checked them to make sure they weren't imitations of their marks, and if they passed they would be stamped again with a newer stamp design.
Interesting fact
The 8 Reales coin from Mexico, issued in 1806, features an interesting countermark, known as the "Morelos" countermark, which was applied to the coin by the Mexican government to verify its authenticity. This countermark is named after the Mexican revolutionary leader, Jose Maria Morelos, who played a significant role in Mexico's struggle for independence from Spain. The presence of this countermark on the coin makes it a unique and valuable piece for collectors of Mexican numismatics.
