Comment
Coins dated 1796 with a star after date have been minted in 1814Interesting fact
One interesting fact about this coin is that it was minted during a time of great political and social change in Genoa. The Republic of Genoa, which had been a powerful maritime and trading power for centuries, was in decline and would eventually be annexed by Napoleon's France in 1797. The 8 Lire coin, which features an image of the Genoese patron saint, St. George, on one side and the coat of arms of the Republic on the other, was likely minted as a way to stabilize the economy and maintain public confidence in the government during this tumultuous period. Despite these efforts, the Republic of Genoa would eventually cease to exist, and the coin would become a relic of a bygone era.
