The panda's habitat is limited to six mountain ranges in the central Chinese provinces of Sichuan, Gansu and Shanxi. A census revealed that there are 1,864 giant pandas in the wild and 300 in breeding centers and zoos around the world. Good news: in 2016, the panda was downgraded from an "endangered" to a "vulnerable" species.
The panda is a bamboo-eating machine! It spends up to 16 hours a day foraging and eating; the panda needs to consume up to 15 kilograms of bamboo to meet its daily nutritional requirements.
Giant pandas are undeniably adorable. But, as with all bears, it's best to keep your distance. Their molars are seven times bigger than a human tooth, and their jaw muscles are strong enough to chew hard bamboo.
Females only have one reproductive cycle a year, lasting just 72 hours. And it doesn't help that a panda's sex is difficult to determine before the age of four.
When a mother panda gives birth to twins, one of them may be abandoned. In captivity, keepers use trickery to ensure that both cubs receive maternal care: they entrust the twins to their mother in turn, making an exchange every few days.
