For Spring Festival, Chinese communities around the world will gather on January 28 to celebrate the Lunar New Year and admire the magnificent Lion Dance. The coin celebrating this tradition promises to bring good luck in 2017!Spring Festival (Chunjie) is the most important celebration in Chinese culture. It marks the high point of the year when life begins anew and the community gathers to receive sacred wishes for prosperity and peace in the New Year. The majestic lion symbolizes this traditional rite.
In Canada, where almost 5% of the population is of Chinese origin, crowds flock to watch the lion dance in the streets. Spectators can easily find the location of this ancient celebration by following the roar of drums, cymbals and the gong that repels evil and punctuates the lion's dance. Lanterns and streamers soar above this exalted atmosphere.
Did you know that?
Although the lion is not indigenous to China, it was offered to Han dynasty emperors to encourage trade along the Silk Road (206 BC to 220). Lion dance first appeared as official court entertainment and was popularized by religious festivals during the Tang dynasty (618-906) in Japan, Korea and Taiwan. Costumes and choreography have diversified, but the symbolism of dragon dance has remained fundamentally the same.
The mighty lion is said to embody all the forces of nature, expressed in the colors yellow, black, green, red and white, which represent the five cardinal points of a Chinese compass (center, north, east, south and west) and the five elements of life (earth, water, wood, fire and metal).
The lion's head is inspired by the mythical dragon, and features a beard and pronounced forehead, often topped by a phoenix-shaped horn symbolizing life and rebirth. In addition, the fawn's ears and tail come from the Chinese unicorn and embody wisdom and good fortune. His spine represents the fortune and charm of the snake, while the hump on his head represents the longevity of a tortoise shell.
Lion dance has evolved in two styles over the centuries. In southern regions, the dance imitates the lion's behavior. In northern China, the style is inspired by the martial arts and features acrobatic movements, while sometimes incorporating lion cubs animated by a single dancer rather than two.
Packaging
The coin is encapsulated and presented in a burgundy double-shell case adorned with the Royal Canadian Mint logo. The case is accompanied by a black protective box.
