Comment
The inspiration for this very special piece came from the square perforated coins used in China after 523 BC. For many, their round shape symbolized paradise, while the square represented earth. These coins were cast in bronze and the holes allowed them to be threaded onto a rope - 1,000 coins were the main unit of purchase at the time. When Chinese immigrants began arriving in Canada at the end of the 19th century, they quickly proved themselves to be hard-working, skilful and demanding of their employers. They contributed significantly to the mining and railroad industries, and were excellent cooks, gardeners and laundry workers. However, their language and culture were so different from the European society that dominated Canada at the time that integration was difficult.
Thanks to their resourcefulness, the Chinese created their own community and overcame their lack of money by using the square-hole coins of their homeland as trade tokens.
Interesting fact
The Elizabeth II (Blessings of Wealth) 2007 silver coin from Canada features a unique design that incorporates a traditional Chinese motif, the "Fu" symbol, which represents good fortune and prosperity. This symbol is surrounded by a stylized representation of a plum blossom, which is a symbol of longevity and good luck in Chinese culture. The combination of these two symbols is meant to convey the idea of wealth and prosperity being bestowed upon the owner of the coin.
