Many varieties existFrom 1528 onwards, the Republic of Genoa was governed by a Doge elected to two year terms.
The Doge, or Governor, was not always afforded name recognition on coinage.
This period was in decline and specifically in 1656 there was a plague that wiped out half the residents of Genoa.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the 8 Denari coin from Genoa is that it features a unique design element - a small shield with the letters "S.P.Q.G." (Senatus Populusque Genovensis) which stands for "Senate and People of Genoa." This indicates that the coin was minted by the Republic of Genoa and reflects the city-state's rich history and cultural heritage.
