Comment

The coronation piece is a coin that was struck in 1822 to the coronation of Pedro I. About the objective of its creation there are some theories, one of then says that it was created to be offered to the Catholic Church on the day of his coronation (common practice among portuguese kings), other one says it was struck as a gift to the guests of the coronation mass and to be put into circulation, the most accepted one says it was only made as a gift to guests of the coronation mass.

The point is that it displeased D. Pedro, this happened for a few reasons:

1 - D. Pedro didn’t like the design in which his bust was bare and laureate, he preferred to appear in military costumes.

2- The inscription “CONSTITUCIONALIS” as well as the complement
“ET PERPETUUS BRASILIAE DEFENSOR” was omitted, what could assume a desire of absolute Power.

3- The design incorporates the royal crown instead of the imperial crown.
4- The face value (6$400) was omitted in the design.

Just 64 were minted, of which only 16 are known

IN HOC SIG VIN (abbreviation of IN HOC SIGNO VINCES, “with this sign you will win”)
IN HOC SIG VIN (abreviação de IN HOC SIGNO VINCES, “com este sinal vencerás”)
