Comment

The original coin is a "600 Réis J" from José I/ Brazil Colony.
In 1809, João Regent has raised its value value to 640 Réis with the stamp "Escudete".
Most of the stamps "Escudete" are fakes from the time the coin circulated.
Later the coin travelled to Azores where, in 1887, received the last stamp, "Crowned GP".
The picture is the coin Nr.15786 from INCM.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about this coin is that it was countermarked with the letter "J" to signify that it was issued during the reign of King José I of Portugal, who ruled from 1750 to 1777. This countermark was applied to coins that were minted during his reign to distinguish them from coins minted during the reign of his predecessor, King João V. This coin, therefore, provides a unique insight into the monetary policies and practices of Portugal during the 18th century.
