Representation of one of the most famous medals realized by Pisanello: that for Ludovico III Gonzaga, Marquis of Mantua. Ludovico III is figured as a armored knight with a big spherical crest. The authorship of the portrait is debated by some scholars. The National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. claims the work is a self-portrait of Pisanello.
