Representation of one of the most famous medals realized by Pisanello: that for Ludovico III Gonzaga, Marquis of Mantua. Ludovico III is figured as a armored knight with a big spherical crest. At sides of the head the heraldic symbols of the sun and the sunflower. In the field, on the left, the value and the mintmark.

The authorship of the portrait is debated by some scholars.  The National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. claims the work is a self-portrait of Pisanello.  The British Museum and the University of Bologna attribute the portrait to Marescotti Antonio.  Photo from the Federico Zeri collection at the University of Bologna.
