Joaquim José da Silva Xavier, known as Tiradentes, was a leader on the "Inconfidência Mineira", a unsucessful separatist movement who claimed for the independence of captainicy of Minas Gerais from Portugal in 1789, with inspiration on the independence of the United States from England. Because of the conspiracy discovery Tiradentes were sentenced to death and had his body quartered. He became a national hero especially after the instituition of Republic in 1889, and the anniversary of his death became a national holiday.
