Comment
Sputnik 1 was the first artificial Earth satellite. The Soviet Union launched it into an elliptical low Earth orbit on 4 October 1957. It was a 58 cm (23 in) diameter polished metal sphere, with four external radio antennas to broadcast radio pulses. It was visible all around the Earth and its radio pulses were detectable.Interesting fact
The 500 Tögrög (Sputnik-1) coin, released in 2007, features an image of the Sputnik-1 satellite on its obverse side, while the reverse side features the Mongolian coat of arms. This coin is made of silver (.999) and weighs 31.11 grams. Interestingly, the coin's design was created by a famous Mongolian artist, B. Sharav, and it was minted by the German company, Leipziger Edelmetallverarbeitung (LEV).
