Comment
In the pure tradition of the 100 francs of his predecessors Charles III and Albert I, Louis II wanted to continue minting the large gold coins used at the Casino's gaming tables. Alas, this attractive coin, requested of the Prince by the SBM (Société des Bains de Mer), remained at the project stage with a few trials, following a change of heart by the French authorities. The 2 gold trials were struck on the initiative of patron Charles de Beistegui, who then handed them over to the BNF's Cabinet des Médailles, where a copy and the corners are preserved. The second copy was exchanged by the BNF for the numismatist Hubert Herzfelder, and later returned to Switzerland by a commercial firm.Maubert's work saw the light of day a decade later in the form of 1, 2 and 5 franc coins.
