Comment
A member of the Atikamekw art cooperative, First Nations artist Raymond Weizineau, from Obedjiwan, Quebec, draws his inspiration from the culture and traditions of his nation."I've been working on my art for a long time and, from a very young age, I saw my grandparents at work. I've always observed the world around me, and that's where my passion for art was born. I draw, I work with moosehide and I sculpt. I'm inspired by ancient stories and legends that explain how life used to be. My grandfather, who was a great inspiration to me, used to take me into the forest when I was little and tell me stories. I'd imagine what life was like for the Atikamekw in another era. Today, I try to reproduce these legends in my drawings and paintings.
Like many Inuit and First Nations cultures, the Atikamekw people living in the Mauricie and Lanaudière regions of Quebec pass on their teachings through storytelling. Tales of the animal world are one of the main elements of their oral traditions, recounting a mythical world where animals speak, characters change shape, creatures die and come back to life, and a single being inhabits various bodies and objects. Even today, the Atikamekw like to describe a person by finding animal characteristics. In Nerosiw Matcisowin, we see elements of this Atikamekw tradition, as passed down from generation to generation.

Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the "Aboriginal Story" coin is that it was designed by Canadian artist and illustrator, Joel Kimmel, who is of Cree and Métis descent. The coin's design features an image of Queen Elizabeth II, surrounded by traditional Indigenous symbols and motifs, such as the Medicine Wheel, the Four Directions, and the Seven Sacred Teachings. The coin's design was intended to celebrate the cultural heritage and traditions of Canada's Indigenous peoples, and to promote reconciliation and understanding between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities.
