In 1875 Abraham (Aka Adolf)and Ida Wertheim opened a small retail store in Eastern Germany. In the ensuing years their stores grew into a department store empire.
Interesting fact
The 50 Pfennigs coin was part of the last series of coins issued by the German Democratic Republic (GDR) before reunification in 1990. It was minted from 1989 to 1990 and features the Berlin TV Tower on the obverse, while the reverse shows the value and the year of minting. The coin was made of zinc, which is a relatively inexpensive metal, and was designed to be easily distinguishable from other coins in circulation at the time. Despite its relatively short time in circulation, the 50 Pfennigs coin has become a popular collector's item among numismatists and enthusiasts of German history.
