Released at the beginning of 2020 as part of the 2020 annual silver piedfort proof sets in anticipation of the games taking place in July 2020, however the Tokyo Olympics were postponed until 2021 due to the global Covid-19 pandemic. The design was re-issued individually in 2021 with an updated obverse date and some colourised strikes. The design was also struck in copper-nickel, colourised copper-nickel (2021), silver proof, colourised silver proof (2021), colourised silver piedfort (2021) and gold proof.
