Pobjoy Mint is pleased to announce the new release of the HMS Erebus 50 pence coin on behalf of the British Antarctic Territory. This stunning new coin is to commemorate the 220th Anniversary of the Birth of the Captain James Clark Ross.
In the year that marks the Bicentenary of the Discovery of Antarctica, this coin is particularly apt as it commemorates James Clark Ross who discovered the largest ice shelf in the Antarctic on his expedition.
Born in London on 15th April 1800, Sir James Clark Ross was a British Royal Navy Explorer. Between 1839 and 1843, Ross was given command of the ship HMS Erebus and led his own expedition to Antarctica and charted much of the frozen continent's coastline, whilst being accompanied by HMS Terror.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about this coin is that it commemorates the HMS Erebus, a British Royal Navy ship that was lost during Sir James Clark Ross's expedition to the Antarctic in 1845. The ship was discovered in 2019, and the coin was issued to mark the 175th anniversary of its discovery.
