With an estimated population of around eight million pairs and living in colonies of over 100,000 pairs in some islands, the Chinstrap penguin is probably the most abundant penguin in the region. Named after the band of dark feathers under the chin which looks like a strap keeping their hat on, they nest on ice-free slopes where they form a strong pair bond returning each year to the same nesting site with the same partner.Interesting fact
