Comment

The common Chimpanzee can be found in north-west and central Africa and is a species of great ape. This primate lives in groups which range in size from 15 to 150 individuals, although they split into much smaller groups to travel and forage during the day. The species lives in a male-dominated and strict hierarchy which means that disputes can generally be settled without the need for violence.

Interesting fact

The 50p coin featuring a chimpanzee on the reverse side is part of a series of coins issued by Gibraltar in 2018 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of naturalist and evolutionary biologist Charles Darwin, who is known for his groundbreaking theory of evolution through natural selection. The chimpanzee design was chosen to represent Darwin's work on the concept of evolution and the close genetic relationship between humans and chimpanzees.
