Comment

This reverse design by Christopher Ironside, together with the Arnold Machin second portrait of Her Majesty on the obverse, was first issued in 1969 to replace the 10-shilling banknote as part of the decimalisation process. However, it was not until 1997 that a silver piedfort version of the Britannia was first issued when the 50p was reduced in size.

This 2019 issue is only the second time a silver piedfort has been issued and features Jody Clark's fifth obverse portrait and forms part of the 5-coin British Culture Set celebrating 50 years of the 50p. This design was also struck in copper-nickel, silver proof, gold proof and gold piedfort and features no privy mark.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about the 50p coin is that it features a unique design of Britannia, the symbol of Britain, standing on the shore, looking out towards the sea. The design is a nod to the country's rich history and its connection to the sea, and it's a departure from the traditional depiction of Britannia on British coins. Additionally, the coin's silver composition and piedfort minting technique, which involves striking the coin multiple times to create a thicker and more detailed design, make it a highly sought-after collector's item.
