Comment

Originally issued to help the decimalisation process in 1969 with the Arnold Machin 2nd portrait only in copper-nickel, it was re-issued with 'New Pence' as part of the 16-piece set to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the 50 pence denomination. This design was also struck in copper-nickel, gold proof and gold piedfort. Issue limit: 5,000.

The design was used again in 2019 with the Jody Clark fifth portrait to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 50p in the Culture set.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about the 50p coin is that it features a unique reverse design that showcases a new interpretation of Britannia, the iconic symbol of Britain, which was created by the artist Matthew Dent. The design incorporates elements of the Union Jack and the shield of the Royal Arms, giving it a distinctly British feel. Additionally, the coin's silver composition and proof finish make it a highly collectible and valuable piece for numismatists.
