Comment

Nine-year-old Florence Jackson, the designer of the Athletics 50p coin, is the first ever child to design a Royal Mint UK coin. She won this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity in 2009 after taking part in a Blue Peter competition. The Coin Design Competition was one of the show’s most popular ever, with Florence’s design beating over 17,000 other entries.

This gold piedfort was struck in 2012 as an Olympic Medal Winners Edition with this design included in a set of 11 pieces (15 sets issued) commemorating the sports for which Great Britain won medal in. A further 11 pieces were issued individually. Issue limit: 29 (total number of medals won).

The design was used on the 2009 issues in copper-nickel and the 2011 copper-nickel & silver.
