Released at the beginning of 2020 as part of the 2020 annual BU and Proof sets in anticipation of the games taking place in July 2020, however the Tokyo Olympics were postponed until 2021 due to the global Covid-19 pandemic. The coin was re-issued individually in 2021 with an updated obverse date. The design was also struck in colourised copper-nickel (2021), colourised silver proof (2021), colourised silver piedfort (2021) and gold proof. The 2020 BU mintage comprised the Annual coin set (37,117 sales), third party trade packaging (27,509 sales) and a Buckingham Palace event saw 190 sales. The Proof mintage comprised the Annual Proof sets (6,397 sales) and Premium Proof sets (2,455 sales). The re-issued 2021 dated obverse BU mintage included Royal Mint packs (22,362 sales) and third party trade packaging (62,197 sales).
