Comment

The Dinosauria Collection begins with Megalosaurus, the first coin in the 2020 series. The coin was also produced in copper-nickel, silver proof, silver colourised proof and gold proof.

Developed in conjunction with the Natural History Museum, this is the first time a dinosaur has featured on an official UK coin. It was also the first ever base metal Brilliant Uncirculated coin produced with a colourised reverse and was not issued for circulation. This colourised copper-nickel edition was exclusive to the Royal Mint.

Megalosaurus was a theropod, a large bipedal predator that roamed Britain during the Middle Jurassic period 170 to 155 million years ago. In 1824 William Buckland, an eccentric clergyman and palaeontologist, produced the first scientific description of what became known as a dinosaur based on fragments of jaw and bone found in Oxfordshire. Buckland named the creature Megalosaurus, which means ‘great lizard’.

Interesting fact

The 50p coin featuring Elizabeth II (5th Portrait; Megalosaurus) is a non-circulating coin, meaning it was not intended for general circulation and was instead produced for collectors. It was part of a series of coins released in 2020 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 50p coin, which was first introduced in 1969. The coin features an image of Queen Elizabeth II on one side and a Megalosaurus, a type of dinosaur, on the other. It's made of copper-nickel and weighs 8 grams.
