The first of 2 coins celebrating 20 years since the publication of the book – The Gruffalo®. The Gruffalo BU: Cased in a wallet, which opens out to reveal illustrations from the book, and information about Julia Donaldson (author) and Axel Scheffler (illustrator). The coin was also produced in silver and gold. 239,038 were issued in BU in total consisting of 108,014 in BU packs, 128,538 in tubes, and 2,486 in PNC’s.© The Royal Mint, 2019

The 50p coin featuring the 5th portrait of Elizabeth II with the Gruffalo design was issued to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Royal Mint's minting of the first 50p coin. It has a special design that includes a cameo of the Gruffalo, a popular children's book character, and is one of the first coins to feature a fictional character.
