In 2013, The Royal Mint began issuing Silver Britannia coins in .999 Fine Silver but it was only in 2014 that the reverse legend was updated to reflect this. The bullion strike was released with a milled edge in wedding sets, paired with a 2014 bullion gold sovereign.Towards the end of 1940 the British Steam Ship Gairsoppa sailed from Calcutta loaded with 7,000 tons of iron, silver and tea. She was sunk on 17th February 1941 by a German U-Boat with only one member of the crew surviving.
To commemorate the recovery of the silver from the S.S. Gairsoppa the Royal Mint released a limited issue Britannia 50p silver coin struck in solid fine .999 pure silver recovered from the S.S. Gairsoppa. This strike has a plain edge with incuse lettering 'S.S. GAIRSOPPA ·' (issue limit 20,000).
Note: The 2013 strike had a different reverse with the purity omitted and was issued for the US market in tubes, while the 2014 was issued as per this entry with the purity noted in a Brilliant Uncirculated pack. In addition, it should be noted that the fields are plain on these strikes, whereas the 2015 has textured fields.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about this coin is that it features a unique reverse design, which was modified specifically for this issue. The reverse of the coin depicts a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, surrounded by a wreath of oak leaves, with the denomination "50 PENCE" written in bold letters at the bottom. This design was created by the Royal Mint's engraver, Jody Clark, and it differs from the standard reverse design used on other coins featuring the 5th portrait of Elizabeth II.
