Issued to celebrate the centenary of the Women's Social and Political Union, a women-only political movement and leading militant organisation campaigning for women's suffrage in the United Kingdom from 1903 to 1917. The coin was issued for circulation as well as in the Annual Coin sets for 2003 in both Brilliant Uncirculated and Proof quality as well as in individual BU packs (9,582 sales). While also being struck in silver proof, silver piedfort and gold proof.


The coin was re-issued in 2009 as part of the 16-piece set to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the 50 pence denomination. The 2009 issue was also struck in silver proof, gold proof and gold piedfort. Issue limit: 5,000.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about this coin is that it was designed by sculptor and artist, Mary Milner Dickens, and features the image of a suffragette chain on the reverse side, symbolizing the struggle for women's right to vote.
