This coin commemorates the 25th Anniversary of the United Kingdom's membership of the European Union, and its six-month Presidency of the Council of Ministers in the first half of the year.As well as being issued for circulation the coin was issued as part of the Annual coin sets for 1998 in both Brilliant Uncirculated (96,192 sales) and Proof qualities, while also being issued in a twin BU pack with the 1998 Britannia (15,370 sales). The design was also struck in silver proof, silver piedfort and gold proof.
