Dionysios Solomos (Zakynthos, April 8, 1798 - Corfu, February 9, 1857) was a Greek poet, best known for writing the poem "Hymn to Freedom", the first two stanzas of which became the national anthem of Greece and later of Cyprus. The obverse of the coin features a portrait of Dionysios Solomos, a Greek poet and playwright who is considered one of the founders of modern Greek literature. He was born on the island of Zakynthos in 1798 and died in 1857. The coin was issued in 1998 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of his birth.
