Formed in 1971 to demonstrate the talent, professionalism and teamwork characteristic of the Canadian Forces, the Snowbirds proudly carry on the tradition of aerial excellence that dates back to the early years of powered flight in Canada. Their prestigious predecessors include the Royal Canadian Air Force's (RCAF) first air demonstration team, the Siskins. Created in 1929, this team paved the way for many others, such as the Blue Devils, the Sky Lancers, the Red Knight, the Golden Hawks and the Centennial Paladins. Between the end of the Second World War and the unification of the Canadian Forces in 1968, the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) also formed several air demonstration teams, including the Seafire and the Grey Ghosts. The true value of the Snowbirds, and the heritage they represent, is measured in the hearts and minds of the millions of Canadians who each year look to the skies to admire the grace and precision of this team on its exhilarating national tours. Its members proudly continue to be ambassadors for the men and women who serve in all branches of the Canadian Armed Forces, and to pay tribute to the thousands of people, soldiers and civilians alike, who have contributed to their incredible success and popularity across North America.Special features
A TRIBUTE TO HERITAGE. The Snowbirds are known the world over for the precision and grace of their exhilarating aerobatic displays set to music. This piece pays tribute to the tradition of aerial prowess that began in Canada over 90 years ago!
FEATURING THE CT-114 TUTOR AIRCRAFT, DESIGNED AND BUILT IN CANADA! The piece features Canadair's small Tutor trainer, which has been at the heart of the Snowbirds' activities since their inception. By the mid-1960s, Canadair had built 190 Tutor aircraft for the RCAF and the Canadian Forces.
SOLO AIRCRAFT AND DOUBLE DIAMOND FORMATION. The piece shows the team's two solo aircraft, Snowbirds 8 and 9, flying away from each other. In the background, the other seven aircraft perform a vertical climb while executing the Double Diamond formation. From these two basic elements, the Snowbirds develop their show, which features precision aerobatic maneuvers interspersed with impressive head-to-head aerobatics performed by the two solo aircraft.
A NUMBERED CERTIFICATE. The Royal Canadian Mint certifies the authenticity of all its collector coins.
FIVE OUNCES OF PURE SILVER. The coin is struck in five ounces of 99.99% pure silver and enhanced with selective gold plating.
Did you know?
The Snowbirds adventure began in early 1971, when Colonel O. B. Philp, Commander of CFB Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, decided to form a seven-plane air demonstration team to follow in the footsteps of the Centennial Paladins he had ordered in 1967 for Canada's Centennial. Originally made up of instructors from the 2nd Canadian Forces Flying Training School, the team grew to nine aircraft in 1972. Shortly afterwards, selection trials were held to recruit volunteer pilots from across Canada - that's how popular the team was!
The Snowbirds officially became a permanent Canadian Forces squadron on April 1, 1978, 431 Air Demonstration Squadron.
All the squadron's pilots are volunteers, as are most of the technicians and support staff. Selection trials are held every year to recruit new pilots; generally, half the team changes from one year to the next. Over the years, the team has included representatives from every province in the country, and from all branches of the Canadian Forces: the Royal Canadian Air Force, the Royal Canadian Navy, the Canadian Army and the Reserve Force.
Over the past 50 years, more than 150 million spectators have attended one of the 2,700 official shows held in 380 towns and cities across North America. And that's not counting the hundreds of flypasts performed at the country's major outdoor events: from Canada Day on Parliament Hill to the Olympic Games and the Grey Cup.
Typically, over the course of their six-month show season, Snowbirds members sign thousands of autographs and participate in around three or four public events each week. It has long been the team's tradition never to end an autograph session until everyone has received a signed brochure. As role models for young Canadians, the team members are particularly adept at motivating and inspiring children during their visits to schools and hospitals. They encourage young people to stay in school, stay away from drugs and never give up on their dreams, whatever they may be. The Snowbirds are also official ambassadors of the CH.I.L.D. foundation, which helps children with intestinal and liver diseases, for which they organize a special show every summer.
Packaging
The coin is encapsulated and presented in a black double-shell case adorned with the Royal Canadian Mint logo. The case comes with a black protective box.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the Snowbirds coin is that it features a unique combination of silver and gold plating. The coin is made of .9999 silver, but selectively plated with 24-karat gold to create a striking contrast between the two metals. This adds an extra layer of visual interest to the coin's design, which features a pair of snowbirds in flight. The use of gold plating also adds an extra level of luxury and exclusivity to the coin, making it a truly special collectible item.
