The famous French Brothers, Auguste and Louis Lumière revolutionised photography in 1903 by patenting the Autochrome Lumière, which achieved recognition as the best means of producing colour images. To celebrate the Centenary of this photographic milestone Pobjoy Mint is proud to announce a unique new coin on behalf of the British Virgin Islands Government.Born to the well known portrait painter, Antoine Lumière, brothers Auguste and Louis first made their name in cinema by screening their first motion picture in 1895. Sharing the belief that the cinema had no future, the brothers abandoned filmmaking and turned towards photography. The financial security the Lumières enjoyed from their booming sales of the Etiquette Bleue, a ‘dry plate’ photographic process Louis discovered earlier in 1881 at the age of seventeen, allowed them to return to this medium and research the problem of colour photography. In 1903, they developed the Autochrome Lumière, a photographic technique which produced the first ever colour photograph. Launched commercially in 1907, this process remained the favoured means of colour photography for the next 30 years.
The design on this new coin depicts a reproduction of a portrait of the Lumière Brothers with the wording ‘The Lumières’ underneath. What makes this coin unique is the removable frame, which allows for a photograph to be placed in the central panel to personalise the coin for yourself, a family member or a special friend. The wording in the surround reads ‘Centenary of the First Colour Photograph’.
Approved by Buckingham Palace the obverse of the coin bears a fine effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS FSNAD. This coin is available in Proof 5oz Fine Silver and has been struck four times to achieve the exceptional Pobjoy Proof finish.
