Comment
Celebrate the history and artistry of Canadian circulation coins with this 50-cent fine silver coin, part of the Royal Canadian Mint's new series featuring all six Canadian circulation coins. The coins, all struck in fine silver and each as beautiful as the next, weigh five ounces and are enhanced by selective gold plating on the obverse and reverse.About the design
Created by Canadian engraver Thomas Shingles, the design on the reverse represents the coat of arms of Canada. To the left of the shield, a lion holds the Union Jack, while to the right of the shield, a unicorn carries a flag adorned with three fleurs-de-lys. The shield is divided into five sections bearing the historic emblems of England, France, Scotland and Ireland, as well as a sprig of three maple leaves. It is encircled by a ribbon bearing the motto of the Order of Canada: Desiderantes meliorem patriam (They desire a better country). Above the shield is a royal helmet surrounded by a garland of maple leaves, and the helmet's crest is surmounted by a crowned lion holding a maple leaf. Above the lion, symbolizing Canada's sovereignty, is the Crown of St. Edward, representing Canada's constitutional monarchy. At the base of the shield is a ribbon bearing the motto A Mari usque ad Mare (From Sea to Sea) and a garland composed of the floral emblems of England, Scotland, France and Ireland. The coat of arms and cordon are enhanced by gold plating. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, according to Susanna Blunt. The portrait of Her Majesty and the cord are enhanced by gold plating.
Packaging
The coin is encapsulated and presented in a burgundy double-shell case featuring the Royal Canadian Mint logo. The case comes with an illustrated protective box.
