Comment
The black bear (Ursus americanus), also known as the baribal, is the most common bear in North America. Its range extends from northern Canada and Alaska to northern Mexico, and from the Atlantic to the Pacific coasts of North America. It can be found in many American states and in all Canadian provinces. It prefers forests and mountains where it can find food and hide. In the past, the black bear population probably numbered two million. Today, it is estimated that there are between 500,000 and 750,000 black bears on this continent. Long hunted for its fur, the black bear is now suffering from human encroachment on its natural habitat. The Black Bear population is generally stable1.Smaller than the Brown Bear and the White Bear, this animal's fur color varies from black to white (white fur is caused by a recessive trait), reddish and silvery-gray, depending on the region. It is therefore mistakenly referred to as a "black bear". There are 16 recognized subspecies, some of which are endangered. The Black Bear does not hibernate in the strict sense, but spends the winter in a state of somnolence, living off the fat reserves accumulated during the autumn. It is an omnivore, although its diet is dominated by plants. Contrary to popular belief, the Black Bear is a good swimmer and easily climbs trees to escape danger.
