In 1957, Canada changed the coat of arms it had used since 1921.Canadian artist Alan Beddoe was commissioned to create a new version according to the preferences of Canada's new sovereign, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, who wished to replace the Tudor crown with that of St. Edward and change the color of the leaves from green to red.
Alan Beddoe's version was reproduced two years later on the 50-cent coin (traditionally featuring Canada's coat of arms) by the Mint's master engraver at the time, Thomas Shingles.
