The Balthazar J. Vorster 50 cent coin was issued in 1982 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Balthazar Johannes Vorster, who served as the Prime Minister of South Africa from 1966 to 1978. The coin features an image of Vorster on the obverse (front) side, and the South African coat of arms on the reverse (back) side. It was made of nickel and weighs 9.5 grams.
