The SS Great Eastern was an iron sail-powered, paddle wheel and screw-propelled steamship designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and built by John Scott Russell & Co. at Millwall Iron Works on the River Thames London, England. Laid down on the 1 May 1854 and launched on the 31 January 1858, she was the largest steamship ever built at the time. Between 1858 and 1864 she was operated as a passenger ship by the Eastern Steam Navigation Company before being auctioned off and converted to a cable-laying ship.
It was in this guise as a cable-laying ship that the Great Eastern secured a place in history as the ship that laid the first transatlantic telegraph cable in 1866. She spent several more years in that role before being auctioned off. She finished her life as a floating music hall and advertising hoarding in Liverpool between 1885 to 1887. The Great Eastern was broken up for scrap at Merseyside in 1889.
