Comment
The baiji is a possibly extinct species of freshwater dolphin, and is thought to be the first dolphin species driven to extinction due to the impact of humans. Since Baiji means 'white fin' in Chinese, it means 'white-finned dolphin'. In China, the species is also called the Chinese river dolphin, Yangtze river dolphin, Yangtze dolphin and whitefin dolphin. Nicknamed the "Goddess of the Yangtze", it was regarded as the goddess of protection by local fishermen and boatmen. It is not to be confused with the Chinese white dolphin or the finless porpoise.Interesting fact
The Baji Dolphins coin was designed by the Chinese artist, Xu Jiaojun, who is known for his work in creating the designs of many Chinese coins. The coin features two dolphins swimming together, with the Chinese characters "珍珍珠" (meaning "treasure" or "valuable") and "五元" (meaning "five yuan") inscribed above and below the dolphins, respectively. The coin's design is meant to symbolize the importance of protecting marine life and the beauty of China's coastal areas.
