Comment

This coin did not circulate. In the last issue of copper coins, a breach of the monetary standard was determined, that is, from 1799 onwards, the values of XL, XX and X Réis were minted with half the previous weight. The value of V Réis of this series is not issued at that time, as it was minted in 1881-82 by order of King Luís of Portugal (1861-1889), the numismatist king who wanted to complete the series of these coins in his collection. For this reason, specimens are almost always found in excellent condition.
 D. Luís, upon finding a Numismatics Office, which had existed since 1795 in the Paço da Ajuda, began to buy coins and medals for his studies of history. In 1867 he acquired the immense and beautiful collection of Dr. Augusto Carlos Teixeira de Aragão and was appointed Conservator of the Cabinet. His magnificent collection is now in the Portuguese Numismatic Museum.

Interesting fact

The 5 Réis - Maria I (Small Type; Lisbon) 1799 coin from Brazil is interesting because it was minted during a time of great change in Brazil's history. The coin was minted in 1799, just a few years after Brazil gained independence from Portugal in 1808. This coin is a symbol of the transition from a colony to an independent nation. Additionally, the coin features an image of Queen Maria I of Portugal, who ruled Brazil during this time of transition. This coin is a unique piece of history that represents the blending of Portuguese and Brazilian cultures.
