The 5 Réis coin from Portugal, minted between 1777 and 1785 during the reign of Maria I and Pedro III, features an unusual design element - a small hole in the center of the coin. This hole was intentionally drilled into the coin to indicate its authenticity, as counterfeiters at the time were known to produce coins with a solid center.
