Comment

According to documentation kept at the Casa da Moeda de Lisboa (INCM), all copper coins of D. Maria I were minted on coins of III Réis of her father, King D.José I, although this is not always visible.
INCM records only indicate the total number of coins minted in each year and not the years of the used dies, which is a practice that has always been used until today.
Therefore, we only know that, out of 5 Réis, 300 788 coins were minted.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about the 5 Réis - Maria I 1795-1798 coin from Azores (Portugal) is that it was minted during a time of economic and political turmoil in Portugal. The coin was issued during the reign of Queen Maria I, who ruled Portugal from 1777 to 1816. During her reign, Portugal faced several challenges, including a severe economic crisis, political instability, and conflicts with neighboring countries. Despite these challenges, the 5 Réis coin remained a widely used denomination and was an important part of everyday transactions in Azores and other parts of Portugal.
