Interesting fact
The 5 Réis coin from João VI's reign (1818-1824) was the first coin to feature the portrait of a Portuguese king. Prior to this, Portuguese coins had featured the royal coat of arms or other symbols, but not a personal portrait of the monarch. This change in design was a nod to the increasing influence of the Enlightenment and the desire to promote the idea of a more personal, accessible monarchy.
