Comment
Governor Albert Kikkert proposed in the gathering of 'Gouverneur en Raden van Policie' (Governor and Courts of Policy) of July 13th 1818 to cut silver 'patienjes' in three and five to produce 5 and 3 Reales respectively (equal to 30 and 18 stuiver.) The coins were countermarked with a '5' or a '3' in a circle. These patienjes were also known as Spanish or Spanish colonial 8 Reales ('Pilaardollar' or 'Spaansche/Spanish Mat' or patienje.)
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about this coin is that it was issued during a time of great change and upheaval in the Netherlands Antilles. In 1818, the same year that this coin was minted, the Netherlands Antilles was formed as a result of the dissolution of the Dutch West India Company. This coin, therefore, serves as a tangible reminder of a pivotal moment in the history of the region.
