In 2018, 100 years of the birth of Nelson Mandela is celebrated, for which the South African Mint will issue a series of coins dedicated to the aforementioned event. In total there will be four coins that will be issued throughout the year, three coins that reflect different moments in the character's life, and one for circulation with a 5-rand bimetallic and circulating type. The 5-rand coin will be the first circulation currency issued in South Africa that has a latent image.Interesting fact
The Nelson Mandela Centenary coin was issued to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Nelson Mandela's birth, and it features an image of Mandela on the obverse (front side), along with the inscription "Nelson Mandela Centenary 1918-2018" in English, Afrikaans, isiXhosa, and isiZulu. The reverse (back side) of the coin features the South African coat of arms and the denomination "5 RAND" in bold letters.
